Eddie barreled through life the next few days, pissed and confused, hiding his pain the only way he knew how.

Pumping iron at Holt’s.

Early morning gym sessions weren’t usually his style, especially on workdays, but with the tornado that Fiona had inspired, he needed some adrenaline-fueled clarity.

On Friday morning, he demolished punching bags with Cobra for a full hour. On Saturday morning, Lex led him through a pummeling lower-body workout that left him collapsed on the floor but beaming. On Sunday morning, his phone vibrated just as he breezed into the glassy foyer of Holt Body Fitness. He tugged his phone out of his mesh shorts pocket.

When he saw the name, his stomach knotted.

FIONA: I’m sorry.

Eddie slowed his steps, his shoes snicking on the polished tile. He hadn’t expected anything from Fiona, much less an apology. He blinked a few times, squeezing the handle of his work-out duffel in the other hand.

“You comin’ in or what?”

Eddie snapped his gaze up. Travis grinned at him from behind the reception desk.

“Yo, buddy. I didn’t expect you here today.” Eddie pocketed his phone and sauntered up to his friend. They bumped fists. “You short a front desk girl?”

“Actually, yeah, Melanie called in sick, and nobody else could cover.”

“Where’s your cute little Holt skirt some of them wear?” Eddie teased.

“Didn’t fit over my huge man glutes, obviously.” Travis leaned back, the chair creaking under his weight.

“Well, put me down for a weight room visit,” Eddie said, jerking his chin toward the computer. “So I can work on my own damn man glutes.”

His best friend had always given him visits on the house, but now that Eddie had a stable salary, he made sure to pay the yearly membership fee alongside everyone else. Still, Travis had given him a steep discount. Not as steep a discount as Amara got, though.

“Yeah? That special lady of yours requires perfect man glutes?” Travis teased. But the mere mention of that special lady—the friend of Amara’s—made his stomach plummet.

“Most ladies require perfect man glutes these days,” Eddie said. “But no, that lady isn’t looking at my fine ass anymore.”

“What happened? You two seemed to hit it off.”

Eddie shrugged, seeing Fiona’s face when he blinked. The weight of his phone reminded him that she might have sent another message, and the curiosity was killing him.

But that wasn’t the only thing killing him. Keeping Fiona’s pregnancy a secret was a weight he hadn’t expected. He wanted to tell Travis, but it never seemed like the right time. Not when everything with Fiona was in a constant state of upheaval.

“She was nice, but not my type,” Eddie finally said. More words burned at the back of his throat—But you know who apparently is my type? A pregnant pop star who keeps me at arm’s length. “I dunno, dude. I might be too old for this dating shit.”

“Too old?” Travis shoved his shoulder. “You watch your mouth. You call yourself old, you’re calling me old.”

Eddie smirked. “Call it what you want then.”
